48 Hours for Equal Rights Giving Challenge

July 19, 2023 - July 20, 2023

The 175th Anniversary of the First Women’s Rights Convention

On Wednesday, July 19-20, 2023 our nation will celebrate the 175th Anniversary of the historic Seneca Falls Convention—commonly known as the first Women’s Rights Convention of 1848. The Seneca Falls Convention lasted two days and launched a national movement for women’s suffrage.

On this 175th Anniversary, the National Women’s Hall of Fame is hosting a special campaign to raise 175 gifts in just 48 hours. The 48 Hours for Equal Rights Giving Challenge is an opportunity for us to reflect on the progress made over the past two centuries, but more importantly, it’s a chance for us to continue the ongoing fight for true gender parity, here and around the globe.

In 2022, UN Women and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs reported that “gender disparities are worsening in the face of ‘cascading’ global crises—such as the COVID-19 pandemic, violent conflict, and climate change—[couple] with the backlash against women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights.” The study estimates that at the current rate of progress, “it will take up to 286 years,” to achieve true gender parity.

If we are celebrating the 175th Anniversary of the First Women’s Rights Convention, and it is estimated it will take an additional 285 years to achieve gender equality at the current rate of progress, where do we fall on this timeline?

In 1848, the Seneca Falls Convention launched a movement for women’s suffrage and drafted the Declaration of Sentiments—in just 48 hours. What can we make happen today?
